A large wood, with a well surfaced path into much of it, and lots of grassland beyond. You can even hear the birds singing - in spite of the planes, trains & automobiles! This ancient woodland is designated a nature reserve. It is situated between a housing estate and the A46 Coventry Eastern bypass. It is however large enough for a good walk within the wood, which can be extended to any length you wish by linking into the rough grassland to the north, then going from the NE corner of this grassland under the A46 (using a bridge shared by the mainline railway) and linking to the Warwickshire footpaths. To the south, another link takes you under the A46 and across the former "Brandon Lane Fruit Farm" onto Brandon Road, and from there to the same Warwickshire footpaths. Within the wood there is a well surfaced path, though covered in leaves in many places. Further wide paths take you to the rest of the wood and across the grassland, with many more smaller paths than those shown dotted on the map. In spite of the A46, when in the wood you can hear the birds singing, partly due to the cutting the A46 uses at this point. Indeed on the January afternoon I was there a small flock of Magpies seemed to be making enough noise to try and drown out any noise from the road. A bit further on sweeter voiced birds were easily heard. The "Trains" are on the mainline, and only heard
as you near the northern end of the grassland, and just at that moment you
are likely to realise that you are also on the landing approach to
Coventry Airport. Hence the "Planes". The "Automobiles" are
also noticed much more then as the A46 is on an embankment! Under
the bridge, and a few hundred yards further on you will with luck only
hear the birdsong. Good for Dogs rating:
