Webster's Park

Webster's Park is the newest park in Coventry.  It is built on part of the site previously occupied by Webster's Brickworks. Conversion from a landfill site started in 2001.  By 2002 the 13 acre site had been landscaped, and since then trees have been planted, paths laid, ponds and wetland areas cleared and grassy areas created.

This year (July 2008) finally saw the creation of the first proper entrance.  This starts opposite Bright Street junction with Stoney Stanton Road, then after a short path reaches the actual entrance gate to the park.  Designed by landscape architect Maureen Harris, the entrance improvements include entrance arches and feature railings which reflect the history of the park.

Inside the park is an interesting network of well constructed paths.  The main paths have a permanent all weather surface, with the secondary paths a good gravel surface.  Other tracks will no doubt emerge across the open grasslands, but the hard paths offer access to all areas, and offer a great variety of routes round and across the park.

There is an attractive pond, and many small woods of newly planted trees.  Trees have also been planted in a band all round the perimeter of the park, which will form a good visual break from the proposed major building proposals for "Paragon Park".

The Coventry Canal, circling the site, will be extended into the complex, with footpaths and bridges created, and bars and shops next to the canal.  The Paragon Park development is set to bring some 1,000 new homes and 2,000 jobs to the area.  See Coventry Telegraph article for more details (and search there for more recent articles re why the plans have been delayed!).

There are two significant hills.  One hill is topped by a small stone circle surrounded by a hard path circle.  The second hill is somewhat higher, reached either by wide shallow steps up a wide all weather path or by the secondary "Ridge Path" round the northern edge of the park.  This second hill also boasts a hard path circle and offers exceptional wide views over the city.

Currently this park is a NEIGHBOURHOOD PARK but is intended eventually to evolve into an AREA PARK, joining the other 5 Coventry Area Parks -  Allesley Park, Caludon Castle Park, Foleshill Park, Longford Park and Prior Deram Park.

Good for Dogs rating: 2 dogs

A good sized open space, with areas of interest to explore, and well away from roads.  Maybe should be rated 3 dogs, but I didn't meet any when I visited (maybe because none have discovered it yet?  Dog owners please advise.
