This page is a guide to how to get around this site.
I expect you can find your way round intuitively, but a few notes may help to make your progress easier and quicker.
The site is basically simple, with all "normal" pages having the same header with the buttons to get you direct to your most likely new starting point. Exceptions are listed below, with notes on why I did it this way, and hints on how to make the best use of the structure.
This page covers:
The Main Index is included on the Home Page so that it
gets loaded when you first visit the site, and is thus all available.
Hot-links (under the picture) let you get to near where you want to browse
quickly - note that for the "Other Good Walking Areas" section the links below
take you to the alphabetic part of the long table you want. To return to the top of the page, use: ![]()
You can use "Find within the page" to search for references to most places, or places of a given type (e.g. Park). NB - the "focus" of your browser must be within the frame you wish to search; to ensure this is so, click on the text anywhere in the frame before clicking "search" button or keying "Ctl+F" (or whatever your browser uses).
A useful hint after you have used a link from this page
to (e.g. to a description) is to use your browsers "Back" button to return
to the same point in the index, rather than "Home" to get back to the
start. This takes you back to the same part of the table you were at
before using the link.
Use the search feature below to search Coventry Walks Website only, or the whole WWW. Note that the Coventry Walks Website search is based on the Google cached state, which may be a month or two old - you can get some idea of the date by viewing the Google cached copy of the Home Page and looking at latest news item included - last update was after that date, and before next news item as seen on current home page or news archive page. This search facility can also be reached by clicking "Search" link on the Home Page, or the search button at the top-right of most pages. Note that this search creates the search results in the same window you start the search in, but that when you click a result of the search, the result opens in a new window. If you leave this new window open, clicking other search results will open the result in the same new window. If you can arrange these two windows to both are visible, this can be a useful way of scanning through all the useful search results.
Try looking at the Site Map Page
Links to external web-sites open in a new window, without the Coventry Walks buttons. Wander round the external web-site (or wherever that links you to) as you wish, then close this window to return to the Coventry Walks site underneath.
When you first open a new window this way, you may like
to resize it, re-arrange the view (e.g. close the favorites pane if you have it
open in IE). Closing this window, then opening another for a different
external site will result in the new size and format you have
selected.
If you wish, you can open any page in a separate window. This is useful if you wish to keep it open for reference.
To do so hold your Shift Key when clicking the link, or
use the Right-Mouse-Button to click and select "Open in New Window" (or whatever
method your browser implements).
You can simply open a page with a map or picture and let it download there and then. However this may be slow.
A useful way of working is to download all these first into your local Cache folder (Temporary Internet Files folder with IE). The "All Maps" button downloads all maps, and contains a link to open all photos.
Use these at the start of a session, and then have a cup
of coffee. [ Note: If your browser is set to retain cached files and you
return before they have been overwritten, or if you set it to "Make
available off-line" the download will only be of files updated since your last
visit/synchronisation, and therefore will be a lot shorter.]
If you have any trouble finding things, let me know. If it helps others I will then add another hint here - any views?
