As well as the illustrations used within the main chapters, a series of "Now" views are provided for comparison.

The illustration on the right was taken at Noon, while waiting for the sun to illuminate the Western Front of the house for the "Now" view.  Most illustrations are views of the buildings - this is shown here to provide a glimpse of the other sites worth viewing.

Notes on Format and usage guidance

1.  Resolution of Illustrations referred to above are classed as:

2.  The "Low" resoution links open the illustration in the context of the chapter in which it is first used, or in the "Then and Now" page (if not used in a chapter), or as a JPEG file if not used elsewhere.

3.  "Medium" resolution Illustrations used at present are not currently available at higher resolutions.  Better copies are being sought, and where appropriate will be replace current medium resolution versions.

4. When viewing medium or high resolution copies in Webshots, the on screen view is in medium resolution.  The size of the original is stated under the photo.  If you select "Normal" view it will be adjusted to either 800px wide, or the width of the original if this is less than 800px.  If you wish you can click the view full size link, which will open a new window containing the full size image - which if you are using IE6 (or similar) will then reduce to fit window, but can be made full size by clicking the icon which appears in the bottom-right of the image.
