Gibbet Hill Wood

Transcript from Coventry City Council information board published on the site, with updates where needed.

Key for above map

This is one of 200 woods created around the country through the "Woods on your Doorstep" project to celebrate the millennium.  "Woods on your Doorstep" is supported by the Millennium Commission, Forestry Commission and the Sainsbury Family Charitable Trusts.

The 26.13 acre site was given to the Woodland Trust in 1999 by Coventry City Council and generous financial support was also given by Severn Trent Water.

The new wood is an exciting opportunity to expand the adjacent ancient woodland of Tocil Wood.  The choice of trees for the new planting is based upon the species found there and the area next to the existing woodland has been left unplanted and will be allowed to regenerate naturally.  In time, the developing wood may be colonised by some of the plants, insects and birds from Tocil Wood.

The wood was planted with the help of local people, students and girl guides in December 1999.  The dominant trees are oak, ash, birch and field maple with smaller numbers of willow, holly and rowan.  A mixture of shrubs has been planted around the fringes of the site including hazel, blackthorn, dogwood and guelder rose.

Good for Dogs rating: 3 dogs

Together with Tocil Wood and Tocil Pools, these are lovely areas for dogs, no need for leads, no stiles, lots of rabbits, lovely woods and open areas, small stream running through with lakes and ducks/geese within the University campus, easy access for the car.  You do have to keep dogs on a lead if you go into the actual University grounds.
